The Spiš Museum in Levoča is another specialised museum of the Slovak National Museum with a nationwide scope. In the framework of the museum’s specialisation it focuses on researching the historical development of the town of Levoča, art-history research in the region of the museum’s operation, research of Master Pavol of Levoča in the domestic and central European context, development of the Spišský Castle and its surroundings, registered in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The varied collection of the museum is presented at several exhibitions, where very attractive and highly visited exhibitions are those of Spišský Castle itself and of Master Pavol of Levoča, the creator of the highest Gothic altar in the world, which decorates the Church of St James in Levoča. The museum is situated in the Renaissance burgher house on the Master Pavol Square in Levoča.
